Home Group Sermon Series - 2017

Who Cares When... ?

Sometimes life hits us with problems we can’t handle on our own. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, especially when it seems as though there isn’t anyone who really understands, or even cares, about what we’re going through. The truth is, however, that we never have to face trials alone. God promises to be with us through the joys and sorrows of life. It’s often reassuring to know that what we’re going through is not too different from the experiences of many in our world today or, indeed, not too dissimilar from people mentioned in the Bible.

So, if you're ready to overcome some of the obstacles that are keeping you from living a happy and fulfilling Christian life, this Home Group series ‘Who Cares When...’ is as good a place as any to start. As we study God’s word together let us allow the Holy Spirit to strengthen our faith and shape our lives, particularly as we think about who cares for us during the difficult times of life.

Celebrating 25 Years at Emmanuel

As we look forward to celebrating 25 years since the opening of Emmanuel church in June we have invited several guest speakers, including former clergy, church members, the current, and former, Archdeacons of Southend and the Bishop of Bradwell to preach at our morning services from May to July. As part of this ‘Season of Celebration’ we’re looking at the Apostle Paul’s passionate, and most personal, letter to the Philippians as the basis for our sermon series (with a couple of exceptions for our family services).

The book of Philippians is often referred to as a ‘Letter of Joy’. Joy that Jesus is Lord; Joy in the fellowship we share with other Christians; and Joy in the church being a distinctive presence in the world. There’s no doubt this series will help us to reflect on our past and present and help us to think afresh about the future God has planned for us.

Songs for the Workplace

In Snow White, the seven dwarfs go off to the mine each morning happily singing: 'Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go!' However, their joyful enthusiasm is often far removed from our own experience of work. For many Christians there is a gap between church on Sunday and work on Monday. These six Psalms help us to take our God to work - or maybe discover that He is already present in the workplace. These six studies will focus on aspects of these Spirit-inspired songs that relate to our everyday working lives. They address the frustration we often feel: the temptations to compromise; the busyness and stresses of the workplace and the sometimes overwhelming expectations of colleagues. They will also help us to celebrate the good days when everything is going well.
